subway surf
A few years ago I went with a friend of mine to see all functional Subway Stations at the time. It took us more than 8 hours to get into each single one. Ever since then, I’ve been trying to capture more Subway Glimpses, when I’m Surfing.
Today more stations have opened and I’ll be seeing them through my lenses sooner than later?
The Bucharest subway, is the only Subway in Romania so far, however, there are plans for a future one in Cluj as well.
While it serves as a vital mode of public transportation in the city, has its fair share of drawbacks and issues:
Aging Infrastructure: One of the most noticeable shortcomings is the whole town’s aging infrastructure. Many stations and trains exhibit signs of wear and tear, with outdated designs and a lack of modern amenities. The system could benefit from significant investments in renovation and maintenance to improve the overall passenger experience.
Limited Coverage: Is relatively limited compared to the size of the city. Some areas, especially on the outskirts, are not adequately served by the subway network, forcing residents to rely on other modes of transportation or endure long and inconvenient commutes.
Overcrowding and Rush Hour Challenges: During peak hours, the Bucharest Metro experiences severe overcrowding, making it an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience for commuters.
Lack of Accessibility: The Bucharest subway system falls short when it comes to accessibility for individuals with disabilities or reduced mobility. Many stations lack proper facilities such as elevators, ramps, or escalators, making it challenging or impossible for those who require assistance to access the subway.
Inconsistent Service: While the Bucharest Metro aims to provide regular service, there are instances of delays, disruptions, and inconsistent schedules. Passengers often face unexpected changes in train frequencies or extended waiting times without proper explanations, which can be frustrating and inconvenient.
Safety Concerns: Unfortunately, safety can be a concern on the Bucharest subway. Instances of pick-pocketing and petty theft have been reported, particularly during crowded periods. Additionally, some passengers may feel uncomfortable due to the lack of proper lighting or security personnel in certain stations.
It’s not too clean either.

Despite these criticisms, it's worth noting that the Bucharest Metro still serves as a relatively affordable and relatively efficient mode of transportation for many residents and visitors. It offers an opportunity to explore the city while avoiding the notorious traffic congestion.
Significant improvements and investments are necessary to address the system's shortcomings and enhance the overall experience for passengers, but it’s actually one of the best ways to travel without a car in Bucharest.
