PRIVEȘTE DINCOLO DE REFLEXIE
"Look Beyond Reflection" was one of the exhibitions at Bucharest Photo Week - IV
The events took place between 11-17 September in various locations in Bucharest, mostly focusing on street and documentary photography. In addition to exhibitions and workshops, Bucharest Photo Week also provided an opportunity for photography enthusiasts to meet some of the most popular and talented photographers from Romania and abroad. Most of the events took place at Gallery, F64 and Education Point, as well as spaces provided by Studio Foto Ambrotipescu.
Gallery served as the headquarters of Bucharest Photo Week, where participants found three exhibitions, promotional materials and general information about the festival. Some of the workshops and presentations of Bucharest Photo Week also took place there. - http://bucharestphotoweek.ro
““Look Beyond the Reflection” was made in fragments. The first piece came to me on a day when I was strolling with Alexandra, discussing exhibitions and we decided together that something cool would come out of joining our creative forces. Another time, we were sharing dreams and memories of images and the imagination that occurred in the mirror when we were younger, sitting on a bench. From there, the first idea formed and more ideas kept coming. We kept working with them until we created an entire world, beyond the reflection. We couldn’t stop at just a few frames. What we did and invited you to do was to let ourselves be carried away by what we felt. Looking beyond the reflection is an exercise of courage and will, where you will find a whole world filled with unexpected meanings.”
“In theory, it’s simple, but in practice, it’s more complicated. We needed to create something in a physical format that would actually represent a visual exercise, not just a concept. We wanted to create something that would help guide people to find their own concept through feeling.
None of the artworks have titles; instead, they say “Give it a name.” When we look at something, we usually wonder about its meaning, purpose and utility, assuming that the object was created for a specific function.
In more bizarre cases, we wonder if we guessed the correct function and what the creator intended to convey. For “Look Beyond the Reflection,” the creator took a pause and wanted to let the spectators give a name, a purpose, a meaning and a significance. We provided them with small notes that had to be marked with the preferred artwork number and the title that the viewer considered fitting based on their own life experience.
Each note was then folded and placed in a box.
The installation (the mirror) and the short film represent the kind of purpose or utility we attributed to our project. We put ourselves in the viewer’s shoes and created something based solely on sensation and feeling, guided by intuition to give it a physical form.”
